about

"Mélancolie Mélancolie..." is my debut EP. It is an exploration of the idea of simplicity and detail in LoFi House music.

I consider LoFi House music to be the product of the devolution of House music. As a matter of fact, I found that instead of being played in clubs on big sound systems, the LoFi version of the genre tends to be listened to in intimate spaces. In my opinion, the genre’s main goal is to bring a feeling of nostalgia to the listener through its LoFi aesthetic.

I think that the notion of simplicity is key when it comes to LoFi House music. Yet this idea of simplicity is almost always what defines the beauty of the genre. Thus, it made sense to me that all the songs in “Mélancolie Mélancolie” would be composed using a relatively minimalistic setup and simple techniques. As a matter of fact, in order to compose these five songs, I have only used my laptop, an interface, a microphone and a small midi controller.

The fact that there is no sign of collaboration with other artists in this project is a deliberate choice. In my opinion, an important aspect of LoFi House music its ‘non-collaborative’ quality. In fact, this kind of music is generally produced by small independent producers — hence the amateur-ish sound that defines it — who reject the idea of collaboration as it goes against these ideas of simplicity and minimalism.

Yet when I was working on this EP, my goal wasn’t to make generic LoFi House music, I wanted to create something original. Thus in each song, I decided to focus on certain details, whether they were part of the arrangement, the sound design, the melodies or the rhythm. Moreover, I had no real intent to make an EP that explored a certain genre before the conception of “Mélancolie Mélancolie…”, the ideas for the various songs came naturally and the creative process was quite effortless.

Enjoy!
